Fayette County is governed by a three.person commission. A sheriff's department serves residents across the county. Ansted, Fayetteville, Gauley Bridge, Meadow Bridge, Montgomery, Mount Hope, Oak Hill, Pax, Smithers and Thurmond are each governed by mayors with five council members. Each municipality maintains its own police force. The West Virginia State Police and National Park Service law.enforcement rangers also provide protection. Fire protection is provided by public & private departments working in unison.
